| This derrick is a class of vessel called a semi submersible,
meaning, when its out in the seas it floats on the pontoons to get
to the location, but sinks down to a working depth to be more stable.
about half of the length of the legs deep. This is a small one that
hold its position by anchors, the bigger deep seas versions are 6
times larger and hold position by dynamic positioning using 6-8 propellers
called thrusters. The location is controlled by satellites and land
station signals. The derrick can stay over a well in the sea bed within
3 meters accuracy in 10,000 - 12000 ft of water and 30 ft seas. |
